A Collaborative Vision for the Future – The 2024 IGC Controller Mission Statement
The 2024 revision of the IGC Controller Mission Statement underscores the evolving role of controllers as strategic partners, emphasizing their contributions to sustainable success, ethical standards, and data-driven decision-making. Controllers extend beyond traditional financial management, driving long-term value and fostering agile, sustainable business practices.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE MISSION STATEMENT
Initiated in June 2023, the development of the mission statement was led by Rita Niedermayr in collaboration with the managing board and the members of the International Group of Controlling. This inclusive process involved surveys, interviews, and workshops, gathering continuous feedback from stakeholders within the controlling community. The use of collaborative tools like Miro boards ensured real-time input, aligning the statement with current trends and stakeholder needs. This co-creative approach culminated in the release of the mission statement in September 2024, reflecting a shared vision for the future of controlling.
EVOLUTION OF THE CONTROLLERS‘ ROLES
Since 1996, the role of controllers has transitioned from a primary focus on cost control to collaborative business partnering. By 2024, controllers are recognized as strategic leaders, co-driving business success alongside management, championing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, and embracing digital transformation. The new mission statement reflects controllers‘ expanded responsibilities and diverse roles, with a strong emphasis on ethical standards, sustainability, and agility in today’s dynamic business landscape.
KEY PILLARS OF THE 2024 MISSION STATEMENT
LONG-TERM VALUE & SUSTAINABILITY
Controllers advocate for responsible practices, including environmental stewardship and social responsibility, aligning financial objectives with sustainable growth. They ensure that financial success is achieved while respecting environmental and social responsibilities, embedding sustainability into all controlling processes.
DATA-DRIVEN LEADERSHIP
Leveraging advanced analytics, controllers enhance decision-making processes, ensuring agility and transparency. They are at the forefront of digital transformation, utilizing cutting-edge technologies to provide valuable insights that support strategic and operational decisions.
AGILITY & INNOVATION
Controllers support adaptive management processes, enabling rapid responses to market and technological shifts. They foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, balancing short-term gains with long-term viability, and financial discipline with operational flexibility.
The revised mission stands for a proactive, ethical, and adaptable approach, positioning controllers as central to organizational resilience and continuous improvement. This alignment with modern business challenges reflects the controller’s critical impact on sustainable success, ensuring that organizations remain agile, responsible, and future-proof in an evolving environment.
